If enacted, the measure would let eligible Montana fire departments seek safety grants, with priority for smaller and rural departments and awards limited by available money.
Eligible fire departments could seek grants for firefighter health and safety items, but each application requires a $10 fee and awards depend on available money.
The disaster and emergency services division would award grants to eligible fire departments, companies, and districts. Grant money may pay for safety equipment or other materials that benefit firefighters' health and safety. Applicants must pay a nonrefundable $10 fee and list the requested amount and planned purchases. The division must prioritize smaller operating budgets, rural areas, statewide regional coverage, and needs that affect all firefighters on the roster. The division may not award a grant if the account lacks enough money and may keep up to 1% of an award for administrative costs. Each grant may not exceed $10,000, and a department, company, or district may receive no more than one grant each year. The bill sets July 1, 2025, as its effective date; the measure is reported as failed.
