1
What it does
The department would publish reports every two years counting private and commercial watercraft on 15 listed river stretches. The reporting requirement would end October 2, 2028.
Argument forWeekly counts could help river managers and communities see how heavily different stretches are used by private boaters and commercial operators.
Argument againstCollecting detailed weekly counts and classifying private and commercial watercraft may require department staff time that could otherwise support other wildlife duties.
More detail
The Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks would publish a public report every two years about watercraft use on listed rivers. The report would cover 15 specified river stretches, including parts of the Blackfoot, Clark Fork, Flathead, Bitterroot, Missouri, Gallatin, Madison, and Big Horn rivers. The report would show the number and purpose of watercraft used from May 15 through September 15. It would count private watercraft, commercial watercraft, and total watercraft for each week. The Jefferson River report would also include October. The department would publish the report by October 1 of even-numbered years, and the requirement would end October 2, 2028.
