Charitable food programs may distribute some eggs after their quality assurance date, including eggs that lose their retail grade. The eggs must meet storage, packaging, and labeling rules.
Charitable food programs may donate and distribute some eggs after their quality assurance date. The rule covers eggs past a date the manufacturer or processor reasonably determines they may lose taste or other desired qualities. Grade AA eggs lose their grade 31 days after the coded pack date; Grade A eggs lose theirs after 46 days. Eggs must stay refrigerated, remain in their original packaging, and have been candled and graded. The package must name the distributing program, show a distribute-by date no more than 30 days after the original quality assurance date, and say “Donated Eggs - Not for Resale.” Eggs must reach the consumer before 30 days have passed from the original quality assurance date. The package’s distribute-by date cannot be later than that cutoff.
