Louisiana Works offers eligible employers competitive awards for worker training when program money is appropriated and other funding is not available.
Eligible Louisiana employers can seek competitive awards for worker training that builds skills, improves productivity, or helps workers stay in their jobs. Awards depend on money appropriated for the program.
Awards are capped at $2,000 per worker or apprentice and cannot cover several costs, including equipment and travel. Louisiana Works reports program results to lawmakers each year.
Louisiana Works operates a program offering competitive awards to eligible employers for worker training. Employers must have a physical presence in Louisiana and follow state employment and tax laws. Covered workers must be authorized to work in the United States, work mainly in Louisiana, be permanent and full time, and work for the employer when training begins. The department can use program money only if it is appropriated for awards or program administration. Before helping with an application, workforce board staff must identify federal or other funding that could pay for the training instead. Training plans may last up to six months and must finish within a year after the award is approved, unless the department allows an extension.
Award recipients may use the money only for allowed training costs, and Louisiana Works reports program results to lawmakers. Spending is capped at $2,000 per covered worker or apprentice. Reports include award and application totals, training types, and the number of workers who completed training. Allowed costs include classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and other costs the department finds relevant. Money cannot pay for equipment, licenses, curriculum development, worker travel, online subscriptions, or tuition reimbursement. Training that starts before an award is made is excluded unless the department approves it. Award criteria are due by July 1, 2028. Annual reports begin March 1, 2029, and cover the previous fiscal year.
