Signed Louisiana law requires health plans to cover mobile crisis response and adult crisis care without prior approval, but its start date is unclear.
Louisiana health insurers must cover mobile crisis response for children and adults, and short-term crisis care for adults, when eligible providers deliver the services.
Health insurers must cover mobile crisis response and behavioral health crisis care from eligible providers. Coverage applies to health plans offered in Louisiana. Mobile crisis response serves children and adults; behavioral health crisis care is for adults. Insurers may apply deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments, and may choose how to reimburse providers. Insurers may ask providers for records showing a crisis at the time of service, medical need, and a follow-up plan. Mobile response providers must be licensed and coordinate with the state-sanctioned Crisis Hub. Behavioral health crisis care providers must meet those same coordination requirements and hold one of the licenses listed in the act. The enrolled text says the act takes effect July 1, 2027, but the recorded action history lists July 1, 2026.
