Civil cases involving up to $50,000 would fall within the First and Second Parish Courts’ territorial authority, while larger connected claims would move to district court.
The First and Second Parish Courts would hear civil cases involving up to $50,000, subject to listed limits. The rule applies within each court’s territorial boundaries in Jefferson Parish. It covers the amount in dispute or the value of the property, excluding interest, costs, and attorney fees. The courts’ authority remains subject to separate statutory limits. Cases involving possession of leased property follow the rental-amount limits in Code of Civil Procedure Article 4844(A). If a connected counterclaim, intervention, or third-party opposition exceeds $50,000, the court would lose jurisdiction over the main case and related claims, and the case would move to the Twenty-Fourth Judicial District Court. The Act would take effect when signed by the governor or when the constitutional period for becoming law without a signature expires. If the governor vetoes it and the legislature later approves it, the Act would take effect the next day.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
