Hawaii bars most passenger and cargo ropeways in land districts
Hawaii’s law bars passenger and cargo ropeways across land use districts, while allowing government entities to use them only with legislative approval.
1
What it does
People may not build, maintain, or use passenger or cargo ropeways in any land use district. Government entities are exempt only with legislative approval.
Argument forRequiring lawmakers to approve government ropeway projects could give them a chance to review those projects before they proceed.
Argument againstThe ban could remove a way for people or businesses to move passengers or cargo by ropeway, except for the stated small home-use systems.
More detail
The law prohibits people from building, maintaining, or using passenger or cargo ropeways. The prohibition applies in every land use district and covers powered rope systems that carry people or cargo, including aerial lifts, aerial tramways, and funiculars. Government entities are exempt only with legislative approval. Elevators and systems used only at one home are excluded; the home-use system must be no longer than 100 feet. The law took effect upon approval.
