Hawaii-Ireland commission promotes trade and exchanges
The law provides for a five-member Hawaii-Ireland commission to promote trade and exchanges, and requires it to report yearly to lawmakers and the governor starting in 2028.
1
What it does
A five-member Hawaii-Ireland commission works to advance trade and investment, support joint policy efforts, and promote business and academic exchanges.
Starting with the 2028 regular session, the commission reports its work from the previous year to lawmakers and the governor each year.
Argument forThe commission could help Hawaii and Ireland build trade, investment, and academic ties through joint work and exchanges.
Argument againstPreparing yearly reports could take commission members’ time away from joint work on trade, investment, and exchanges.
More detail
The law provides for a five-member commission to promote trade and investment, support joint policy work, and encourage exchanges between Hawaii and Ireland. The governor appoints three members, the House speaker appoints one, and the Senate president appoints one. Members serve four-year terms, and each appointing authority fills vacancies. Each member must know about or be involved with organizations promoting Irish affairs, or have an interest in Hawaii-Ireland trade relations. The commission may adopt rules to carry out its work. The law took effect upon approval and is repealed on June 30, 2031.
The commission submits a report on its work during the previous year to the Legislature and governor each year. The reporting duty applies to the Hawaii-Ireland Trade Commission and covers its work during the previous year. Each report is due no later than 20 days before the regular session begins, starting with the 2028 session. The law is repealed on June 30, 2031.
