Hawaii rent-to-own homes keep purchase prices fixed up to ten years
Participants in the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation’s Rent-to-Own Program can buy their home at a price held fixed for up to ten years.
1
What it does
Hawaii’s state rent-to-own program keeps a home’s purchase price fixed for up to ten years. Renters who do not choose to buy within that period lose the right to stay.
Argument forKeeping the purchase price steady could help participating renters plan and save to buy their home during the option period.
Argument againstA long purchase option could keep a home unavailable to other renters while the current participant decides whether to buy.
More detail
The program sets the home’s purchase price when renting begins and keeps it fixed for up to ten years. This applies to participants in the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation’s Rent-to-Own Program. The period can be shorter than ten years; a full ten years is not guaranteed. Renters who do not choose to buy within the option period lose the right to stay, and the home must become available to another buyer or renter. The law took effect upon approval on June 24, 2026. The fixed-price period runs from the signing of the rental agreement.
