Hawaii sets aside up to $2.365 million for Hawaiʻi Island conservation patrols
Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources can spend up to $2.365 million on a patrol boat and vehicles for Hawaiʻi Island conservation officers.
1
What it does
The law sets aside up to $2.365 million from state general revenue for Hawaiʻi Island conservation officers: one patrol boat and twenty marked patrol vehicles.
Argument forBuying patrol vehicles and a boat could help Hawaiʻi Island conservation officers cover assignments as more officers arrive and existing vehicles age.
Argument againstSpending up to $2.365 million from state general revenue could leave less money available for other public needs.
More detail
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is responsible for spending the money on the listed patrol equipment. The equipment is for the Hawaiʻi Island branch of the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement. The law allocates $365,000 for one patrol boat and $2 million for twenty police-marked patrol vehicles. Both the boat and vehicles must include sound and light emergency equipment. The total is a spending ceiling; the department may spend only as much as needed. The law took effect July 1, 2026. The money is set aside for fiscal year 2026–2027.
