Vetoed proposal would change how Hawaii selects teacher standards board director
The vetoed proposal would have the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board send three executive-director nominees to the Board of Education, with the Senate required to confirm the choice.
1
What it does
The vetoed proposal would have the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board submit three nominees for executive director. The Board of Education would choose one, subject to Senate confirmation.
Argument forChoosing from three nominees could give the Board of Education more options when selecting the teacher standards board's executive director.
Argument againstRequiring another nominee after a failed Senate confirmation could delay filling the executive director position.
More detail
If approved, the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board would submit three nominees, and the Board of Education would appoint the executive director from that list with Senate confirmation. The rules cover the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board executive director and the Board of Education and Senate roles in choosing that person. The Board of Education could employ the executive director for up to four years. If the Senate does not confirm a nominee, the Board of Education would submit another nominee to the Senate. The Board of Education could terminate the contract for cause, but its termination recommendation would require Board of Education approval or disapproval. The proposal would take effect upon approval, but the supplied status says the Governor vetoed it and returned it without approval on July 15, 2026.
