Eligible Gilmer County residents could get a property tax exemption tied to local sales tax proceeds, but voters and state lawmakers must approve the measure first.
Eligible Gilmer County residents could get a county property tax exemption, with the amount set each year based on local sales tax proceeds. Voters and state lawmakers must approve the measure first.
Gilmer County would exempt part of eligible homestead property from county property taxes. It would cover eligible residents' homestead property within the special district that matches Gilmer County, for taxes imposed by the county for all purposes. The measure would take effect only if more than half of voters approve it and it receives the required two-thirds vote in both legislative chambers. A person generally must apply. A person who received a county homestead exemption for the same home in the prior tax year and remains eligible would not need to apply again. The home's value above the exempt amount would remain taxable. This exemption would add to other applicable homestead exemptions and would not affect taxes imposed by other local governments. The proposed local sales tax would run from January 1, 2028, through December 31, 2037. If voters approve the measure, the exemption would apply to tax years starting January 1 of the following year and ending December 31, 2039.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
