Dudley homeowners in the Laurens County district could receive a city property tax exemption if lawmakers and voters approve the proposal.
Dudley homeowners in the Laurens County district could get a city property tax exemption, with its amount based each year on local sales tax proceeds. Lawmakers and voters must approve the proposal first.
The proposal would exempt part of qualifying home value from City of Dudley property taxes, with the amount set each year based on net proceeds from the local sales tax. It would cover residents of the Laurens County special district whose home is within that district. A person generally must apply, but someone already receiving a city homestead exemption for that home and still eligible would not need to apply again. The exemption would cover only Dudley city taxes on property within the special district, and would be added to other homestead exemptions. It would require a two-thirds vote in both legislative chambers and approval by more than half of voters casting ballots in the referendum. If approved, the exemption would apply to tax years beginning January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2039.
