If lawmakers and county voters approve the measure, eligible Webster County residents could receive a property tax exemption tied to proceeds from a proposed 1 percent local sales tax.
If lawmakers and county voters approve it, Webster County residents could receive a county property tax exemption based each year on proceeds from a proposed 1 percent local sales tax.
The proposal describes a county property tax exemption whose amount would be set each year using local sales tax proceeds. It would cover a resident’s homestead property in the special district that matches Webster County. Any value above the exempt amount would remain taxable. The measure would require a two-thirds vote in both chambers and approval by more than half of the votes cast in a county referendum. Residents would generally need to apply. A person who received another county homestead exemption for the same home in the prior tax year and remains eligible could receive this exemption without a new application. It would be added to other homestead exemptions. If approved, the exemption would apply to tax years beginning January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2039. The sales tax would run from January 1, 2028, through December 31, 2037.
