If enacted and approved by city voters, eligible Brunswick homeowners would receive city property tax relief calculated each year from proceeds of a proposed 1% sales tax.
If enacted and approved by city voters, eligible Brunswick homeowners would receive a city property tax exemption tied to yearly sales tax proceeds through 2039. Home value above the exempt amount would remain taxable.
If enacted, Brunswick would hold a November 2026 vote on the exemption. A majority must vote yes, and city voters could seek a court order if election officials fail to act.
Brunswick would exempt part of an eligible home's taxable value from city property taxes, based on yearly net sales tax proceeds. Only Brunswick city taxes on eligible home property within Glynn County would qualify. The exemption would apply alongside other home exemptions. The exemption requires enactment and city voters' approval. Homeowners must apply unless they received another city home exemption the previous tax year and remain eligible for it on the same home. The exemption would renew automatically while homeowners keep living in the home and remain eligible. They must report losing eligibility. For approval at the scheduled November 2026 vote, the exemption would start January 1, 2027. It would end December 31, 2039.
Brunswick's election superintendent would hold a city vote on the exemption, and the city would pay for the election. Brunswick voters living within Glynn County could vote and ask a court to require election officials to carry out their duties. Enactment requires a two-thirds majority in both legislative chambers and the Governor's approval or the measure becoming law without that approval. More than half of the votes cast on the question must favor approval. If voters reject it or the required election is not held, the exemption would not take effect. The act would automatically expire 365 days after the scheduled election date. The election would occur on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November 2026. A court could require it on that date or the next permitted special election date.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
