East Dublin homeowners in the Laurens County special district could get a property tax break tied to local sales tax proceeds if voters approve the measure and lawmakers meet the required vote threshold.
Eligible residents could get an East Dublin property tax break for their home. The exempt amount would be set each year from local sales tax proceeds, and any value above it would remain taxable.
Voters in the special district would decide whether the tax break takes effect. It also needs a two-thirds vote in both legislative chambers.
The proposal would exempt part of eligible homestead property from East Dublin property taxes. It would cover residents with homestead property in the Laurens County special district, and only the part of the property within that district. The exempt amount would be set each year using net proceeds from the local sales tax collected in the special district; any remaining value would still be taxed. A person would need to apply unless they received the city’s homestead exemption for the same property in the previous tax year and remain eligible. After it is granted, the exemption would renew each year while the person lives in the home and remains eligible. The person must tell the local tax official if they become ineligible. It would add to other homestead exemptions and would not affect taxes imposed by other local governments. If voters approve the measure, the exemption would apply to tax years starting January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2039.
East Dublin’s election superintendent would submit the measure to voters in the special district. Only East Dublin voters who live within the Laurens County special district would vote on the measure. The exemption would take effect only if more than half of votes cast approve it and the bill receives the required two-thirds vote in both legislative chambers. If voters reject it or the election is not held as required, the exemption would not take effect, and the bill would be repealed 365 days after the scheduled election date. The election would be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November 2026. If approved, the exemption would start January 1, 2027.
