The secretary identifies certain state land and notifies the local assessor, who classifies, values, and adds it to the municipality’s property list. The process covers qualifying land held by state agencies that lies wholly or partly within a municipality. The land must belong to or be held in trust for the state and qualify as farmland, forest land, open space land, or maritime heritage land under state law. The classification is personal to the state and does not follow the land if it is sold or transferred. It remains in place without another notice until its use changes or it is sold or transferred. This applies to assessment years starting on or after October 1, 2026. Notice is sent from 30 days before through 30 days after the assessment date, or up to 90 days after it in a revaluation year.
