Starting July 1, 2026, Connecticut's Medicaid program will calculate out-of-district ambulance mileage from the distance traveled with each patient onboard.
For Medicaid-paid ambulance rides, the state calculates out-of-district mileage from the distance traveled with the patient onboard, rounded to the nearest tenth of a mile. Providers must keep records of that distance.
The commissioner bases out-of-district mileage calculations on the distance an ambulance travels with the patient onboard, rounded to the nearest tenth of a mile. This applies when calculating out-of-district mileage for ambulance services reimbursed under Connecticut's state medical assistance program. Ambulance providers may document mileage using any reasonable method that can be checked, such as GPS, dispatch records, or mapping programs. Providers must keep the mileage records in the patient care record, including a trip report with the patient's name and the pickup and destination addresses. This rule applies to mileage calculations on and after July 1, 2026.
