California's signed law sets higher axle weight limits for zero-emission transit buses bought through requests for offers issued from 2027 through 2031.
Zero-emission transit buses bought through requests for offers issued in 2027–2031 get higher weight limits per axle, from 25,000 down to 23,000 pounds. The weights exclude passengers and the driver.
The law raises the weight limit for each axle of covered zero-emission transit buses. They cover zero-emission transit buses bought through requests for offers issued from January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2031. The limits weigh a fueled, equipped bus without passengers or a driver. Other road rules, including federal highway weight limits, still apply. For requests issued in 2027, the limit is 25,000 pounds per axle; in 2028–2029, it is 24,000; and in 2030–2031, it is 23,000. Requests issued on or after January 1, 2032, use the listed 22,000-pound limit.
