Parents unable to attend in person may meet teachers remotely
California law allows a public school pupil’s parent, guardian, or educational rights holder who cannot attend in person to meet the teacher by phone or approved online platform.
1
What it does
If they cannot attend an individual teacher meeting in person, a pupil’s parent, guardian, or educational rights holder may meet by phone or a school-approved online platform. The school must warn about privacy risks, and no one may record or transcribe the meeting.
Argument forParents and other legal representatives who cannot attend in person could still speak with a teacher by phone or an approved online platform.
Argument againstRemote meetings could make it harder to protect private information when families discuss sensitive matters, even though schools must warn them about that risk.
More detail
A parent, guardian, or educational rights holder may speak with the child’s teacher by phone or on a school-approved online platform. This applies to parents, guardians, and educational rights holders of children enrolled in public schools who cannot attend an individual in-person meeting with a teacher about the child. The school must not record or transcribe the meeting. The school must tell the adult about possible privacy and confidentiality risks. Both sides must follow existing laws on recording without consent.
