The agriculture secretary may form two producer committees to advise the department on programs and other needs of California farmers and ranchers.
1
What it does
The secretary may form two producer committees to advise the state agriculture department on its duties under the Farmer Equity Act of 2017.
The committees may give state officials advice on programs, education, outreach, technical help, and other needs of California producers, including socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.
Both committees must be made up of socially disadvantaged farmers or ranchers who are small- or medium-scale.
Argument forProducer advice on programs, education, and technical help could help agriculture officials better understand the needs of smaller and socially disadvantaged farms.
Argument againstLimiting committee seats to certain farm sizes and backgrounds could leave other California producers without a direct voice in these discussions.
