California’s transportation department must create a statewide transit stop registry by June 2027, and operators must match their records and report seating and shelter by January 2028.
The Department of Transportation must create a statewide list of transit stops with their names, locations, seating and shelter information, and unique IDs. It must update the list at least yearly.
Transit operators must match their stop names and locations to the registry, use its IDs in published datasets, and report whether each stop has seating and shelter.
The Department of Transportation must create a statewide registry of transit stops. The registry must list every transit stop statewide, including its name, location, whether it has seating and shelter, and a unique identifier set by the department. The department must use publicly available data as much as possible and may add data that agencies or other authorities submit voluntarily. The department must consider operator input on registry design, data sources, and collection methods, with the aim of limiting adverse staffing and financial impacts. The department must create the registry by June 1, 2027, and update it at least once a year. It may update it more often when needed.
Transit operators must match stop names and locations to the registry, use its unique IDs in published datasets, and report seating and shelter information for each stop. These duties apply to transit operators as defined in state law and cover each of their stops. The datasets include stop information published for trip-planning apps and agency open datasets. The department cannot require an operator to change the unique number it assigns to a stop. Operators must meet these requirements by January 1, 2028.
