Federal immigration work alone would not qualify officers for California training waivers
Applicants with federal immigration enforcement backgrounds would need other qualifying evidence to receive a California basic training waiver.
1
What it does
Federal immigration enforcement work and its required training would not, by themselves, qualify someone for a California basic training waiver. Other training, education, and experience may still count.
Argument forCalifornia agencies could better ensure waiver applicants show knowledge of California law and policing if immigration enforcement work alone does not qualify.
Argument againstExperienced federal officers might need additional California training if their immigration duties and required training alone cannot qualify them for a waiver.
More detail
The commission would not count certain federal immigration enforcement work and its required training, by themselves, as enough to qualify someone for a Regular Basic Course waiver. This covers sworn federal law enforcement officers whose main duties included immigration inspection, border enforcement, or apprehending, detaining, or removing noncitizens under federal immigration laws. The work and training may still be considered along with other training, education, and experience.
