Starting in the 2027-2028 school year, Arizona school districts would have to teach students in grades three, six, eight, ten, and twelve how to use artificial intelligence and its risks.
Each school district would have to teach the ethical, moral, and educational uses of artificial intelligence to all students in grades 3, 6, 8, 10, and 12, using a curriculum the state education department adopts.
Districts would report each year on their instruction and course enrollment. The education department must pick a curriculum from a university-based civic education school meeting set criteria, and may offer guidelines, resources, or grants.
School districts must provide instruction on artificial intelligence, and the department of education must adopt the curriculum for it. It covers all students enrolled in grades three, six, eight, ten, and twelve in each school district. The curriculum must cover basic techniques for using artificial intelligence, including writing prompts; ethical considerations in learning and daily life; and how artificial intelligence might threaten human health and human existence. Districts may offer a separate course for each grade or build the equivalent time into existing classes. The instruction begins in the 2027-2028 school year.
Districts must send an annual report to the department of education. The department must choose a curriculum from an organization that meets four requirements and may help districts with guidelines, resources, or grants. It covers school districts, the department of education, and the organization whose curriculum is chosen. The curriculum developer must be a school within a university under the Arizona Board of Regents with a campus in the state's most populous county, established between 2015 and 2018, that fosters intellectual diversity, promotes ideas foundational to a healthy constitutional democracy, and serves as a community resource for civic education. Grants are optional: the department "may" provide guidelines, resources, or grants. Reports are due on or before October 15 each year.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
