The signed law directs Colorado schools to test children’s vision in pre-kindergarten and selected grades, with hearing tests in kindergarten and those grades; it takes effect August 12 unless a referendum petition is filed.
Schools test vision in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and certain later grades. They test hearing in kindergarten and those later grades, record each child’s results, and tell families when a test finds a problem.
Schools give vision and hearing tests and record each child’s results. Vision tests cover children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades one, two, three, five, seven, and nine, plus children in comparable age groups referred for testing. Hearing tests cover children in kindergarten and those listed grades, plus referred children in comparable age groups. A teacher, principal, or other person authorized by the school district gives the tests. Parents or guardians must be told when a test finds a problem. These requirements do not apply when a parent or guardian objects on religious or personal grounds. Tests are given during the school year. The act takes effect August 12, 2026, unless a referendum petition is filed; if filed, it takes effect only if voters approve it, on the date the governor officially declares the vote.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
