California chancellors must plan more teacher-training partnerships
The California Community Colleges and CSU chancellors must plan more teacher-preparation partnerships by July 1, 2027; carrying out the plan depends on state funding.
1
What it does
The two chancellors must plan more teacher-preparation partnerships, including online programs for rural students and chances for community college students to take CSU courses while enrolled. Putting the plan into practice depends on state funding.
Argument forOnline training and the chance to take CSU courses while at community college could make teacher preparation easier to reach for rural students and future teachers.
Argument againstIf lawmakers do not provide funding before the provision ends in 2033, students may not get the expanded training options the plan is meant to address.
More detail
The two chancellors must develop a plan to increase teacher-preparation partnerships between CSU campuses and community college districts. The plan covers partnerships between California State University campuses and community college districts, including opportunities for students pursuing teaching credentials. The plan must address online CSU preparation programs with community college districts for students pursuing teaching careers in rural communities, and pathways that let community college students take CSU teacher-preparation courses while enrolled. Putting the plan into practice depends on an appropriation in the annual Budget Act or another statute. The chancellors must develop the plan by July 1, 2027. This provision ends on January 1, 2033.
