1
What it does
The signed law adds colleges in California run by Indian tribal governments to the public higher education list. A replacement section set for 2030 keeps that wording.
Argument forStudents could more easily recognize that California includes colleges in the state run by Indian tribal governments in public higher education.
Argument againstThe public college label could make students expect state funding or services, even though this provision does not promise either.
More detail
The signed law adds these colleges and universities to California's public higher education list. It covers colleges and universities located in California and operated by Indian tribal governments. The operator must fit the definition of an Indian tribal government cited in federal tax law. One version of this section is set to end January 1, 2030; its replacement starts that day and also includes these colleges.
