County probation departments could issue work permits to juvenile court wards, and county child welfare agencies to court dependent children, after an authorized written request if the job serves the child’s best interests.
1
What it does
County probation departments could issue work permits to juvenile court wards, and county child welfare agencies could issue them to court dependent children. An authorized person or provider must request one in writing, the job must serve the child’s best interests, and schools may revoke the permit.
Argument forAn authorized written request could help juvenile court wards seek permits from county probation departments and court dependent children seek them from county child welfare agencies, if the jobs serve their best interests.
Argument againstSchools could revoke these county-issued permits under their usual rules, which might interrupt a juvenile court ward’s or court dependent child’s job.
More detail
County probation departments would be allowed to issue work permits to juvenile court wards, and county child welfare agencies to court dependent children. Probation departments may serve juvenile court wards under state law sections 601 or 602. Child welfare agencies may serve court dependent children under section 300. A person or provider allowed by the law must first file a written request. The job must serve the child’s best interests. School districts, employers, and state agencies must recognize these permits like school district permits. Schools may revoke them under their usual rules.
